Republican women to meet Monday

The Mesa County Republican Women monthly luncheon on Monday will feature Mesa County Undersheriff Rebecca Spiess, who will speak about the FBI National Academy.

The luncheon will be at noon at the Masonic Center, 2400 Consistory Court.

Cost is $13 per person. Call 257-7120 to RSVP.

Liquor-server training class at City Hall

The city of Grand Junction is offering free training for liquor licensees, their managers and employees from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday in the City Hall auditorium, 250 N. Fifth St.

The course is a rescheduling of the class that was offered Oct. 26. The training will cover server responsibility, identification checking and enforcement, recognizing signs of intoxication and guarding against over-service of patrons.

Lottery proceeds meeting is Tuesday

Great Outdoors Colorado board and staff will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Two Rivers Convention Center, 159 Main St., about the use of GOCO’s portion of state lottery proceeds in the next five years.

Residents and representatives of local governments, state agencies, land trusts and user groups from Delta, Gunnison, Mesa and Montrose counties are encouraged to attend.

City, county offices closed Veterans Day

City of Grand Junction government offices will be closed Wednesday in observance of Veterans Day. Trash pickup and recycling schedules will not be affected.

On Wednesday, metered parking spaces downtown and in the Rood Avenue parking garage will be free.

Mesa County offices also will be closed Wednesday, including the Health Department and Department of Human Services, 510 29 1/2 Road; Planning, Public Works and the Regional Transportation Planning office, 750 Main St.; and the offices at the Mesa County Courthouse, 544 Rood Ave.

The closure does not affect the Sheriff’s Department, Criminal Justice Services or Mesa County Animal Services.

Theater performances postponed again

Grand Valley Community Theater performances of “Blithe Spirit” are postponed until January because of cast members ill with the H1N1 flu.

The play originally was scheduled for late October, then rescheduled for Nov. 11–14 at Showtime Productions, 2148 Broadway.

More information will be available closer to the new January performance dates, according to an e-mail from Grand Valley Community Theater.

Flu shots available for veterans

The Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center has a new shipment of 500 seasonal flu shots available for veterans, who can receive them without charge.

Flu shots are given on a walk-in basis from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Full immunity from the flu normally develops about 14 days after the shot.

The center has given more than 6,000 seasonal flu shots to its 11,700 registered patients and staff.

Partners raising funds this month

In an effort to raise funds to help kids, Partners is offering “Turkey Hands” for sale for $1 at 27 locations in the Grand Valley.

Stop by any of the participating stores through Nov. 30, including six City Market stores, five Wendy’s locations, four Alpine Bank locations, three Shell stations, Go-Fer stores and the Carl’s Jr. Restaurant on North Avenue. Other businesses include Dos Hombres in Clifton, Main Street Cafe, Munchies in Fruita, Acorn Truck Plaza, Old Chicago and Texas Roadhouse.

Parachute teen competes in pageant

Cambrea Castillo of Parachute was among several Western Slope teens who attended the Miss Colorado Teen USA competition Nov. 1 in Greeley.
