Xcel urges inspection of gas meters
Xcel Energy would like customers to check their outdoor natural gas meters as winter approaches. Heavy snow and ice can damage or clog meters, which may result in gas leaks.
Leaks can be detected by a strong, persistent odor similar to sulfur.
Carbon monoxide detectors are also recommended, and a news release from Xcel advises people to stay more than 10 feet away from power lines if they climb onto their roofs to knock snow off the roof or trees.
