1953 brought a group of local artists together including, Verona Burkhard, Al Nestler, Ruth Moss and Helen Martin to incorporate the Mesa County Arts Center Board. The Chipeta Girl Scout Council is formed. The first drive-up bank at Fourth Street and Colorado Avenue is established by US Bank. Not to be outdone, the First National Bank at Fifth and Main Streets creates their own version on the sidewalk. Other noted events of the year, include the premiere of Disney’s “Peter Pan”, a vaccine for polio, the first issue of Playboy with Marilyn Monroe as the centerfold, the first Chevy Corvette, the first James Bond novel and most importantly, the first color television set.
