In 1978, Eddie and Shirley Clements have the first local balloon rally. Rick Enstrom defeats incumbent Howard Roland and becomes the youngest Mesa County Commissioner at 24-years-old. Gene Urruty, leader of the Basque community, builds a handball court at 24 and G Roads called Plaza Urrutia. The Mesa College Orchestra becomes the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra. Hilltop Rehabilitation opens a new facility at 12th Street and Patterson Road. The historic Anderson Furniture Company at Second Street and Colorado Avenue is destroyed by fire.The Ridges, Village Nine, Wedgwood, Paradise Hills, Spring Valley, Northridge, and Clifton Village are built. Nationally, Jimmy Carter signs a bill which allows home brewing of beer.
