The annual event arrives at the fairgrounds again.
Lindsey Burenheide holds up the Reserve Champion banner for her sister’s lamb while Allison flashes a big smile to the crowd. Her lamb sold for $3250. Last year Allison was pictured crying over her steer. Not this year.
Tiria Griffith, 18, is consoled by her mom Dondi just before her Grand Champion market steer was auctioned for $7,500 at the 2011 Mesa County 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction. Children who compete in the fair must sell the champion and reserve champion animals. According to fair officials, the 4-H and Future FFA programs generate more than $1.5 million for the local economy.

Ashley Stieg, 11, holds her bourbon red turkey named Big Foot while waiting her turn in the showmanship class. The 4-Hers have to tell an expert judge everything about their particular breed of bird. Last year she showed a white turkey which won Grand Champion. But this year her whites were eaten by a raccoon.
