Praying mantis are insects, but the carnivorous creatures are known to hunt mice, other insects, and even hummingbirds. This one was recently spotted near the Daily Sentinel building downtown. Mantis catch prey with their lightning-fast folding arms that have sharp barbs. Often, a newly hatched mantis’ first meal is a sibling. The insects were imported to America to control pest populations, and today are a welcome sight to most gardeners.
