Paddle sports and other active outdoor recreation contribute $10 billion annually to Colorado’s economy and support more than 107,000 jobs, according to a recent report from the Outdoor Industry Foundation.
Take a hot summer day, add the lure of a cool river, and soon you’ll have anglers waist-deep in the Taylor River. This particular spot near the Lodgepole campground gets fished quite often, but it’s a refreshing way to spend a few hours.
The clear waters of the Taylor River above Almont offer picture-perfect dry fly fishing in a summer when abundant flows are hard to find. The river is controlled by Taylor Park Dam, which releases water to meet demands from the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association.

A proposed land swap would give the BLM ownership of nearby land also being used by bikers even though it’s on private property.
There still is plenty of water for fishing and recreation on most Colorado waters, including the Gunnison River. But that may change if drought conditions continue or worsen. A temporary, voluntary ban on fishing and water recreation was issued last week for the Yampa River through Steamboat Springs.
