Anglers on Grand Mesa during the first weekend in May discovered most of the higher lakes still frozen or with extensive ice and snow cover. Mid-elevation lakes such as Ward Creek Reservoir are starting to open and have plenty of room around the shores for fishing.

The park is nationally known for the quality of it rock climbing and a proposal now before the state Parks and Wildlife commission would expand climbing into a nearby stae fish hatchery.
A golden eagle nears its nest on a limestone-cliff ledge near Rifle Falls State Fish Hatchery. Golden eagles and other raptors are among the many bird species seen and recorded during the annual Spring Bird Count scheduled for Saturday by the Grand Valley Audubon Society.
