Trip leader Nate Klema comes from a serious whitewater river running family from Durango. He taught trip participants the value of wearing wet cotton clothing in the Grand Canyon’s July desert heat.
In Marble Canyon the Bureau of Reclamation sought to build a dam in the mid-1960s. They constructed a support tunnel and these rusty tools are found at the tunnel’s entrance.
Climbing from river to rim the July heat gets intense. There are several warning signs on the Bright Angel Trail about not trying to hike from the South Rim to the Colorado River and back in the same day, especially in summer.
