Kids enjoy a ride on one of the elephants at the 65th Annual Western Colorado Shriners’ Circus at the Mesa County Fairgrounds. The circus will have two shows on Saturday, 10a.m. and 8p.m. Proceeds from the shows benefit the work of the Western Colorado Shrine Club.
An emperor scorpion carries seven of her newly born litter of baby scorpions on her back after giving birth Wednesday at the John McConnell Math and Science Center. The scorpion gave birth to at least nine young, but consumed several due to the stress of field trips before employees at the center blocked off her terrarium with a rope and black paper to create a nursery.
Sharing their grief, Cullen Robertson holds Natalie Thomas as friends of Andrew von Guerard gather at Colorado Java House Sunday to ride in honor of the 21-year-old Andrew, who was killed in a bicycling accident in Newton, Mass., on May 17. Thomas was Von Guerard’s girlfriend, while Robertson was his friend through high school and college. About 40 people participated in the ride, which wound through downtown Grand Junction and ended at Lincoln Park.

An old Cottonwood tree fell into this house at 221 29 Road at about 2p.m. Friday afternoon due to high winds. The tree also took down power lines. No one was in the house at the time. The Grand Junction Fire and Police Departments were on site.

The three-day tour through southwest Colorado is the first of several, and will include stops in Montrose, Cortez, Durango, Bayfield and Alamosa. Close to 60 children from Kidden Around Learning Center participated in the event designed to teach able-bodied athletes to play sports with Special Olympic athletes before disabled children are eligible to participate in Special Olympics.
Jim Sheets of Las Vegas stops to photograph Mary Mansfield’s sculpture “Gathering Soul” in the four hundred block of Main Street. Sheets stopped to get a cup of coffee and had to walk the downtown to see the art. “It’s an outstanding little city”, Sheets said.
The Grand Junction Fire Department were training Wednesday morning on the new Smeal Fire Apparatus Tower/Ladder fire truck at the Grand Junction City shops. The new truck has a 100 foot ladder and can pump up to 2,000 gallons of water a minute.

A woman, left, tells a Mesa County Sheriff officer how she missed the takeout at the blue Heron boat launch while tubing on the Colorado River Tuesday afternoon. The current prevented her from reaching shore at the takeout. She landed about a mile down river and called for a ride back to the launch.
