With the wind and rain on the Fourth of July, these members of the Grand Mesa Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution didn’t mind those old wool uniforms so much during the parade. Jeff Gumone, left, one of the workers at annual Kiwanis Pancake Day in June, wears a plastic “replica” of the rear portion of the human anatomy. The “replicas” were provided by Kiwanian Pete Jouflas, who wanted to demonstrate how the kitchen volunteers work their tails off, wrote Mike Moran, who sent in this photo. The Kiwanians raised more than $59,000 at the annual Pancake Day and Silent Auction at the Two Rivers Convention Center.
Several Montrose High School students worked this summer with the U.S. Forest Service in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison National Forest and Uncompahgre Plateau Project’s Forest Intern Program. Jorja and Corbin Wallace saluted their great-grandfather, Nolie S. Covey, and other World War II veterans with Grand Junction Honor Flight when the group returned from its most recent trip to Washington D.C. “Many family members and friends were present to welcome (Covey) home and express their gratitude,” wrote Kember Langner, Covey’s granddaughter.

The Grand Junction Cobras 13U Competitive Team won the Triple Crown Mountain Magic tournament in Steamboat in June. The Cobras defeated the Front Range Fever from Highlands Ranch 4-1. This is the Cobra’s third championship win in the team’s last four tournaments.
