At his 50th high school reunion in Pamlico County, N.C., Jack Broughton and his classmates signed a flag to honor classmate George Bennett, who died in Vietnam 45 years previous to the weekend reunion. Broughton, also a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran, took the flag and a wreath to the National Cemetery in remembrance of Bennett. The Colorado’s Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service was May 12 and to honor all the firefighters who have lost their lives, Grand Junction Fire Department Truck 1, Black Crew, climbed 220 flights of stairs in recognition of the 110 flights of stairs in each of the World Trade Center’s twin towers that were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
Firefighter/paramedic Josh Sparks, Capt. Clark Thompson, firefighter Jerome Gardner and engineer Ted Weber wore full firefighter gear and carried 200 feet of fire house, 4 extra breathing air bottles and other hose appliances and tools, wrote Harmony Ward, senior administrative assistant with the fire department, who took these photos.

When this photo was taken on May 23, this “Century Plant,” an agave neomexicana, with a 13-foot flower stalk was getting ready to open its yellow flowers. The plant is in the cactus and succulent garden, which was created in 2000 next to the CSU Extension Office at the Mesa County Fairgrounds. Western Colorado Congress Trail Hand volunteers worked on the Mount Garfield Trail on May 17. The volunteers “widened a section of trail, reclaimed a few places where braiding had occurred and put cairns where the best route was hard to follow,” wrote Lee Gelatt, who sent in these photos. Nicole Travis picked the key that started a new Subaru Impreza during the May 23 “Be Cool and Stay in School” car giveaway through Grand Junction Subaru and Mesa County School District 51. Travis graduated from Grand Junction High School in May and plans to study engineering at the University of Colorado in Boulder. To qualify for the giveaway, Travis had a 99.78 percent attendance record for the 2011–12 school year.
