Kathy Guerrie, left and moving right, Jana Colosimo, Kathy Buxton and Peggy Johnson, members of the Friends For the Fun of It chapter of the Red Hat Society, pick peonies in a field owned by Ernie and Kathy Guerrie. “The peonies usually bloom right around Memorial Day and are the flower of choice for grave decorating over the Memorial Day weekend,” wrote Darleen McKissen in her May email submission. “But like most other vegetation this year, they are a few weeks early. That is okay, the Red Hat Society ladies will not let them go to waste!”

Keller Williams Colorado West Realty joined Keller Williams offices nationwide to mark RED Day on May 10 by doing a community project. More than 25 agents and office staff from the Grand Junction realty did landscaping at The House, the new teen shelter. The realty also baked cookies and raised nearly $7,000 for The House. A number of people participated in a Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado training course, Outdoor Stewardship Crew Leadership for Trails and Ecological Restoration, on April 14–15. Isabel Davis, 14, of Palisade hits a mud pool while running The Gauntlet on May 19 at the Grand Junction Motor Speedway. There were more than 400 participants in this first mud run that raised $12,181 for Special Olympics and its area athletes and programs. Cyclists begin the L’Eroica Historic Race on May 19. The race covered 102 miles from Grand Junction to Glenwood Springs, recreating a race that was held from 1899–1915. L’Eroica is a points race in which participants are awarded points based on how close their bike and attire are to those worn around 1900 and other items.
