OK, we know there is a school of thought that says the streets of Grand Junction look awful for a few weeks every spring, what with all manner of old furniture, tree limbs, boxes and who-knows-what in front of just about every house in town.
Yes, it is unsightly.
But we take a different view. We think the annual Grand Junction Spring Clean-Up is one little benefit provided by the city that just about everyone can and should appreciate.
How often do residents of other cities have to wonder what are they ever going to do with that tattered old sofa or that Christmas tree they never got around to taking to the compost?
That’s an easy question to answer in Grand Junction. Simply put it in front of your house in the spring and city crews will come haul it away for you.
And haul away they do.
The Daily Sentinel Westlife staff compiled some cleanup facts:
✔ 12 percent of the city’s annual garbage is picked up during Spring Clean-Up.
✔ 50 city employees and private contractors work on the two-week-long project.
✔ They pick up 3,000 tons of stuff we don’t want.
✔ It costs the city about $400,000.
That’s a lot of trash, a lot of people and a lot of money. For which we say, thank you.
