Your Town, Nov. 1, 2009

Saturday, October 31, 2009

It’s time to box up the ghoulish decor and turn your thoughts to roasting turkeys and mashing yams.

But before you dive into that, it might behoove you to adjust all the clocks you didn’t get around to “falling back” last night after participating in masked revelry.

(Did you change the smoke detector batteries?)

Funny how one day we’re dressed up in costumes, pretending to be superheros and alter egos while eating too many Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and the next day, our efforts shift to fretting over matching tablecloths and centerpieces for the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Sadly, not everyone has the opportunity to gather around a laden table among family or friends to dine and give thanks.

Everyone is welcome to attend The Salvation Army’s traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, at the Elks Lodge, 249 S. Fourth St.

For information, or to request delivery of a meal to shut-ins, call Sibyl Marsh at 242-7513.

And, none of this takes place without donations of turkeys and other items from the community — that’s where the real superheros come in.

Call Marsh for information.

The gentler side of Thanksgiving will be celebrated with a “Gentle Thanksgiving” potluck, hosted by the Vegetarian Society of Colorado, Nov. 21, at the Global Heart Spiritual Center, 1622 Glenwood Ave.

Take a plant-based dish to serve eight, the recipe, your own service and beverage. There is no charge.

Not sure what to take? Go to www.Gentle Thanksgiving.org or www.vegan.com for recipe ideas.

Diners will gather at 5 p.m. and eat at 6 p.m.

Call Marian at 255-0417 for information.

Friends of McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area will have its fall barbecue and Adopt-A-Highway cleanup beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Meet at the Trail Through Time trail head. Take Interstate 70 west to Exit 2, turn right and drive straight to the trail head.

From 9 a.m. to noon, members will clean the designated area (muffins and coffee will be provided). From noon to 3 p.m. will be the barbecue mixer. A dinosaur tour will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., presented by board member and Museum of Western Colorado archaeologist Zebulon Miracle, who will lead an educational tour highlighting the geological and paleontological features of the area.

Register by Nov. 4 by calling 314-7364, or go to www.mcinniscanyons.org for information.

In an effort to find out if Mesa and Molina area seniors would like to have a weekly scheduled lunch day, Gray Gourmet is inviting seniors in the Mesa and Molina area to a honey barbecue chicken and noodle Romanoff lunch at noon Nov. 10 at the Mesa Community Center.

After lunch, there will be entertainment and door prizes. Advance reservations are required. Call 243-9844, ext. 4, for reservations.

The Grand Junction Chapter of the Colorado Mountain (Hiking) Club will have its next meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the American National Bank building, 131 N. Sixth St.

The program will be a presentation on the Moose on the Grand Mesa Project by Stefanie Duckett, terrestrial biologist with the Colorado Department of Wildlife.

The Western Colorado African Violet Society meeting is at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at 128 E. Columbine Drive.

The topic of discussion will be “The Many Methods of Potting African Violets.” The meeting is open to anyone interested in African violets.

Call Florence Naylor at 257-1718 for information.

The Mount Garfield Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will have its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Whitman Educational Center, 248 S. Fourth St.

Shirley Rowe will speak on CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Call Teri Dunn at 314-6286 for information.

The DAR will present a free genealogy workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Loyd Files Library at the Museum of Western Colorado.

Anyone interested in DAR membership or wanting to learn more about researching for any lineage organization is welcome to attend.

Call Anita at 858-9016 or e-mail nitasue@acsol.net to register.
