3rd county child-welfare supervisor sacked
A third longtime Mesa County Department of Human Services supervisor was fired last week as part of a makeover of the department’s child welfare program, The Daily Sentinel learned Tuesday.
County Human Resources Manager Sandy Perry confirmed that Greg Meier, a child welfare supervisor who had been employed with the county since 1986, was terminated Friday.
In addition to Meier, Department of Human Services Director Tracey Garchar let go Treva Houck, director of Family and Childrens’ Services, and Mark Neujahr, a child welfare supervisor. Combined, the three worked for the county for more than 80 years.
Garchar said Monday the firings are part of changes aimed at assisting families before case workers have to remove children from homes and at more quickly identifying and providing services to families.
Garchar has been directed to slice $1.5 million from the county’s child welfare program. His predecessor, Len Stewart, was fired in November by county commissioners after he failed to reduce the budget.
Meier has an unlisted phone number and couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday.
