A marvelous Mavs season

Most fans of the Colorado Mesa University women’s basketball team were no doubt disappointed the Mavericks came up short in their first game at the Division II Elite Eight tournament in San Antonio Tuesday.

But that loss to a tough team cannot detract from what the Mavs accomplished in this marvelous first season under head coach Taylor Wagner.

The Mavericks put together a 31-1 record prior to Tuesday’s game. They won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship and the South Central Region tournament. They became the first CMU team, men’s or women’s, to make it to the Elite Eight in the 21 years that the school has belonged to the NCAA. And they generated a new level of local interest in women’s basketball.

Congratulations, Mavs, on a marvelous season.
