A new county administrator

The man who will replace Chantal Unfug as county administrator is an Iraq war veteran, a Utah National Guard colonel and an 11-year veteran of Mesa County government, most recently as interim county administrator.

Tom Fisher knows his way around stressful management situations and understands the workings of county government. He is a solid choice to take over the administrative reins at the county under the current board of county commissioners.

Regular readers of these pages know The Daily Sentinel has taken serious issue with the process the commissioners used to fire Unfug in January. But we didn’t dispute their right to fire their top administrator and hire someone else.

And we can’t argue with their decision to hire Fisher for that spot, without interviewing any other people for the job. If they believe Fisher is the right man — and he certainly has the resume and local experience to meet the requirements — there is no reason for them to go through a costly and time-consuming national search.

We congratulate Fisher and expect he will serve the county well in the administrator’s job. But, unlike his commission with the Utah National Guard, which cannot be taken away from him without cause, he should always remember the example of his predecessor and understand there are no guarantees beyond today with his county job.
