A win in Fruita?
The second time may have been the charm for a proposed Fruita Recreation Center and a sales-tax increase to fund it. It appears Referred Measure 2C was approved by Fruita voters Tuesday.
However, residents of Fruita may not know for weeks whether the measure officially passed. The Mesa County Elections Division has until Nov. 19 to report final totals, and it is still tallying 1,565 ballots that are being re-examined for several reasons.
But supporters of the rec center know one thing. A victory now looks far more probable than it did last April, when a similar measure was put on the municipal ballot.
Seven months ago, the rec center won in the initial count by just two votes. A recount showed it actually tied, and therefore died.
Tuesday’s tally showed the rec center winning by 113 votes, out of more than 5,000 votes cast.
Rec center supporters worked hard this fall to convince their fellow Fruita residents that Referred Measure 2C makes sense for the community. It appears like they may finally have succeeded.
