Accidental gunshot victim dies from wound

Grand Junction police have not identified a 40-year-old local woman who was shot and died from her injuries late Monday.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office was conducting an autopsy Tuesday to determine the cause and manner of the woman’s death.

The woman told emergency dispatchers around 11 p.m. she accidentally shot herself with a rifle at 541 1/2 Wasatch Drive. She died of her injuries at St. Mary’s Hospital, police said.

Sgt. David Krouse of the Grand Junction Police Department said at least one other person was at home during the time of the shooting, but investigators believe the incident to be accidental.
