ACCUSED OF KILLING HUBBY, WIFE APPEARS IN COURT

MIRIAM HELMICK HELD ON $2 MILLION BOND IN SHOOTING DEATH

Whitewater woman Miriam Helmick was advised Friday on murder charges for allegedly killing her husband, Alan Helmick.

Alan Helmick, 62, died from a gunshot wound to the head in his Whitewater home June 10.

Miriam Helmick, 51, who appeared Friday afternoon in court via videoconference from Mesa County Jail, softly gave one-word answers to questions by Mesa County District Judge Bruce
Raaum on whether she understood conditions of her bond and the charges she faced.

Helmick said she wanted a public defender to represent her.

Helmick is in custody on a $2 million bond. She was arrested on a warrant in Jacksonville, Fla., and Mesa County Sheriff’s Department deputies traveled there to retrieve her so she could face charges in Mesa County.

Helmick on Friday was dressed in a red jail suit, a color reserved for the those considered to be the jail’s most dangerous inmates.

She faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and 11 counts of forgery. If convicted of first-degree murder, Helmick could face life in prison or the death penalty.

Assistant District Attorney Rich Tuttle confirmed Friday the attempted-murder charge stems from an incident in which Alan Helmick’s vehicle caught fire while he was in the vehicle. Alan Helmick was waiting for his wife outside a Delta business.

An arrest affidavit, which should reveal more details of the case, is expected to be unsealed early next week, Tuttle said.
