Action will be on the field, not the sky during July 4 Rockies game

When the city of Grand Junction announced Friday it is canceling the July 4 fireworks show, it put a damper on what the Grand Junction Rockies were hoping would be a big night for the Rookie League baseball team.

The fireworks show was scheduled to follow the Rockies game at Suplizio Field. Instead, Rockies General Manager Tim Ray said, the club will try to put on a good show on the field during the game.

“We’ll just keep it as is,” Ray said. “We think that’s going to be a great night anyway. People will have the day off. The fireworks were controlled by the city, and we didn’t have a whole lot to do with that other than play a baseball game prior to it. I don’t blame them for (postponing).”

Before the Rockies moved to Grand Junction and the Pioneer League scheduled them to play at home on July 4, the city fireworks show packed people into Suplizio Field, charging $4 in advance and $5 at the gate in 2010.

Last year the show was free because of construction at the sports complex. Fans set up lawn chairs in Lincoln Park for the show because the stadiums were closed.

Ray said as of Friday afternoon, the Rockies had sold about 2,100 tickets for the game, in addition to the 1,200 season tickets. The club will refund single-game tickets to fans who don’t want to go to the game without the fireworks show, or it will exchange them for another game during the season.

The game on July 4 starts at 6:30 p.m., with gates opening at 4:30 p.m. and the ticket office at Suplizio Field opening at 3:30 p.m. Single-game tickets are $10 and $8.

“I don’t think we’ll have much of that,” Ray said of tickets being returned. “Obviously some people will be coming for fireworks, but baseball and the Fourth are so synonymous.”

A statement from the city said should fire danger subside, it will attempt to reschedule the fireworks show for later this summer. Ray said city officials told him they would try to pair a rescheduled fireworks show with a Rockies game.
