Art comes down to make room for new pieces

Jon Schler looks at the new Art on the Corner piece, “Flight Time Set,” by Gary Price, at the Seventh Street roundabout Saturday.

What goes up, must come down in downtown Grand Junction.

Work began early Saturday morning to take down multiple sculptures that were part of the city’s Art on the Corner Exhibit during the past year and replace them with different sculptures.

Lyons artist John King watched workers erect his new “Green Snap Dragon,” a powder-coated, steel sculpture that took him nearly a month to build. King’s towering lime green sculpture stands above the roundabout at Seventh and Main streets where his other sculpture stood before its removal Saturday.

The 26th annual Art on the Corner Exhibit’s Sculpture Change took several hours and involved forklifts, cranes and dozens of volunteers. Nineteen new sculptures were installed Saturday along Main Street.

King hopes pedestrians are drawn to the snapdragon’s tumbling pieces and floating quality.

“You get the sensation they are some sort of being,” King said of his sculptures. “Less mechanical, more organic. That’s what I’m going for.”

The sculpture change was part of this year’s Grand Junction Art & Jazz Festival taking place downtown through today. Art on the Corner was one of the first outdoor exhibits of its kind in the country. The concept of installing art on or near sidewalks on busy city streets is an obvious way to beautify an area and give the public free access to art.

For those reasons, King said, he is pleased to be part of the 2010 exhibit.
