Avalanche hits near Ridgway

County officials unable to verify reported injuries

An avalanche near the town of Ridgway in southwestern Colorado reportedly injured several people Thursday.

There were reports late Thursday night that one person was killed, but The Daily Sentinel was unable to confirm those reports, and details about the avalanche were sketchy.

The avalanche reportedly occurred outside of town in an area known as Elk Meadows.

A man with the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team who answered the phone Thursday night but didn’t identify himself said the rescue crew was still out in the field.

“We’ve been instructed not to talk to anyone” until the team receives clearance from Ouray County sheriff’s officials, the man said.

Emergency dispatchers in Montrose County said they had no information about the avalanche and referred calls to the Ouray County Sheriff’s Department.

Ouray County Sheriff Dominic Mattivi couldn’t be reached for comment.
