BLM comment period begins for proposed mountain-bike race

Public comment is being sought for a mountain-bike race that would draw about 600 participants to the red-rock trails south of Grand Junction next September.

The race organizer, Epic Rides, is proposing that the racers start in downtown Grand Junction and then venture through parts of the Bangs Canyon Special Recreation Management Area, affecting parts of the Lunch Loop trails, Butterknife and Magellan Loop. Some trails may be closed during the event, the Bureau of Land Management said.

Grand Junction, Mesa County and the Grand Valley Trails Alliance are working with the BLM to assess the feasibility of the race.

Comments can be mailed to the Grand Junction Field Office, 2815 H Road 81506, Attention: Carrie Surber; or sent to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

The proposed course maps with supporting documents are available at http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/gjfo.html. Comments will be most helpful if received at the BLM by Dec. 19.
