BLM considers geothermal lease proposal

GUNNISON — The Bureau of Land Management is giving the public until June 24 to submit comments on a proposal to lease land in southeastern Gunnison County for geothermal energy development.

The BLM says a renewable energy company has nominated two areas covering about 14 square miles. Some of the land overlaps habitat for Gunnison sage grouse and Canada lynx. The company’s name wasn’t released.

The BLM will analyze possible environmental impacts before deciding if leases should go forward.

No public lands in Colorado have been leased for geothermal energy development yet. A February auction on a proposed lease for geothermal development near Buena Vista was delayed so officials could do more environmental analysis.
