Boulder rejects a third of aspiring pot shops

BOULDER — Less than a year after requiring marijuana shops and growing operations to get local licenses, Boulder has rejected more than a third of the applicants.

The Daily Camera reports that 41 of 119 applications have been rejected for reasons ranging from zoning problems to incomplete paperwork. About half the rejections came because of criminal records of the owners, operators or investors.

So far only 38 businesses have been given licenses. Many of the rejected businesses are still open while they appeal the city decision. Others have closed shop or moved to cities with less stringent rules.
