Bowie seeks coal lease expansion

The owner of the Bowie No. 2 Mine near Paonia is seeking to expand the mine by 160 acres.

Bowie Resources LLC has applied to the Bureau of Land Management’s Uncompahgre Field Office to add the acreage to its existing federal coal lease.

The BLM is conducting an environmental analysis on the proposal and is seeking public comment.

Under the proposal, the coal would be mined using existing coal transportation and surface facilities. The company plans to use a zero-impact drilling technique to do shallow exploratory drilling beneath the 160 acres to determine the extent of minable coal, the BLM says. Access to the Terror Creek Road for drilling would be gained from the Bowie No. 2 Mine site.

The lease modification would be offered by a noncompetitive sale based on fair market value.

The BLM is working to identify any measures that would be required to protect surface resources and is seeking input on issues that should be addressed.
