Boy to be charged as adult in slashing at school

Charges include attempted murder

The juvenile accused of slashing the throat of a Montrose High School student faces a charge as an adult of attempted first-degree murder and two related conspiracy charges.

Michael Yates, 14, has been held at the Grand Mesa Youth Services Center in Grand Junction since the attack on Nov. 11.

An assailant cut the throat of Mallory Haulman, 17, that morning as she walked into Montrose High School.

Haulman returned to classes at Montrose High after surgery.

Yates also is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.

A second 14-year-old boy also is being held in the juvenile detention center, but the two are being kept apart.

The second boy has not been identified.

Haulman said she did know the assailant.

Colorado law allows prosecutors to pursue felony charges against juveniles as young as 14 when dealing with crimes such as murder or attempted murder.

Yates is to appear before Montrose District Judge Jeff Herron on Wednesday.
