Briefs: Mesa State Roundup January 18, 2009

• Mesa falls to Wildcats in Denver

It was a three-point game at Brownson Arena in November, with Mesa State College hanging on for a 71-68 victory over Johnson & Wales University.

The Wildcats turned the tables Saturday night at the Thunderdome in Denver, upending Mesa State 75-63, dropping the Mavericks to 6-9 heading into RMAC West Division play.

The loss, Mesa State’s fifth in the past six games, also saw the end of Ryan Mathews’ double-figure scoring streak at 10 games. Mathews hit only one of four field goals and scored three points.

Kurt Bangle led the Mavericks with 13 points and Ryan Mortensen had a season-high 12 points off the bench. Mortensen, a backup point guard, hadn’t scored more than five points in a game all season, but he hit 4 of 7 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and made a pair of free throws. He also had four rebounds, behind only guard Andre Carter.

Indoor Track

Esmeralda Martinez-Ramos took third in the 3,000-meter run and Andrea Ager placed ninth in the 800 run to lead the Mavericks in the Air Force Academy All-Comers meet.
Martinez-Ramos finished in 11:28.30, which was the best time among all Division II runners.

She was 24 seconds behind the winner, Katherine Ward of Air Force.

Ager finished the 800 in 2:34.86 with teammate Jessica Smith right behind her in 2:35.80.

Monique Keck placed 15th in the 800 and 12th in the one-mile run.
