Clifton man suspected of assaulting girl

Charles Pattison

County Court Judge Craig Henderson on Tuesday set bond at $500,000 for a Clifton man suspected of repeatedly molesting a 13-year-old girl.

Charles David Pattison Jr., 33, fled to Las Vegas last month after he confessed to a Mesa County Sheriff’s Department investigator that he inappropriately had touched the girl, according to an arrest warrant affidavit and a prosecutor. The girl told authorities Pattison molested her on roughly 15 occasions, usually as she was trying to sleep, according to the affidavit and the prosecutor.

Pattison became the focus of investigators April 1 when county social service workers referred information that the girl had told a school counselor and friends about being assaulted, the affidavit said. Interviewed at the Western Slope Center for Children, the girl outlined three specific incidents.

“(Victim) said after one incident Mr. Pattison said, ‘He told me not to tell anyone,’ but she was unsure of the timing of that statement,” the affidavit said.

When Pattison was formally interviewed April 15, he initially denied the molestation allegations. He eventually confessed, admitting to touching the girl between February 2009 and October 2009, the affidavit said.

“Mr. Pattison stated he did this due to stress from (his girlfriend’s) pregnancy, the upcoming baby, and ‘mild curiosity,’ ” the affidavit said.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Trish Mahre told a judge Tuesday that Mesa County authorities had to extradite Pattison from Las Vegas, where he was believed to have fled shortly after his confession to investigators. Mahre said Pattison was contacted by authorities there while acting “suicidal” in the desert surrounding the city.

Pattison is scheduled to return to court May 18.
