Colo. lawmakers consider youth concussion bill

DENVER — Former Bronco wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and an NFL official support a Colorado bill that would protect youth athletes who suffer concussions.

Senate bill 40 would prevent high school athletes believed to have suffered a concussion from returning to a game without a medical evaluation. Coaches would also be required to remove a player from a game if they suspect the student suffered a concussion.

New Jersey, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Connecticut have already passed similar legislation. Utah is considering a bill.

Joe Browne, senior advisor to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, spoke in support of the bill today before a legislative committee considered it.

The Colorado measure is named after Jake Snakenberg, a Colorado high school student who died in 2004 after being hit during a football game.
