Congrats, state champs
It’s difficult to believe that just a little more than a decade ago, Glenwood Springs High School’s football program was in such disarray that it didn’t even field a varsity football team one season.
Yet, there were the Demons in Aurora Saturday, winning the Class 3A state high school football championship.
It’s also hard to believe that Olathe High School had never won a state football championship in its long history. But that changed Saturday on the same field in Aurora, when the Pirates captured the Class 2A football championship.
Olathe defeated Erie High School 22-21 in overtime, while Glenwood Springs beat Fort Morgan 23-14.
Both Western Slope high schools reached the top in stellar fashion — going undefeated throughout the 2008 season.
Congratulations to the Demons and the Pirates, not just for their victories Saturday, but for their unflagging efforts throughout the season.
Congratulations as well to their coaching staffs, who prepared them for the big games this past weekend and instilled in them a can-do spirit that helped them stay focused and victorious, even when things didn’t appear to be going their way.
Finally, kudos to the families, friends and communities that supported the teams throughout the season. Many people from Glenwood Springs and Olathe braved the vagaries of a Rocky Mountain winter and Interstate 70 driving last weekend to cheer on their champs.
