Coroner: Monument death homicide

The death of a woman whose body was found Tuesday in Colorado National Monument has been ruled homicide.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office today said 49-year-old Kathy Fortner, of Grand Junction, suffered blunt-force head injuries.

Tourists at Colorado National Monument reported finding a body Tuesday near the west entrance while they were attempting to take a picture near a park sign around 12:30 p.m. The body was located 300 feet north of the western entrance to the monument and about 10 feet off the east side of the road, on relatively flat ground in the sagebrush.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department is heading up an investigation. Authorities are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious around the west entrance of the Monument on the night of July 1, through the early morning hours of July 2, to contact the agency’s complex crimes unit at 244-3267.
