Coroner: Man killed mother-in-law, himself

An 84-year-old Montrose woman died of asphyxiation, a result of smothering, and her 61-year-old son-in-law shot himself in the head, the Montrose County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Jeanne L. Mennell’s death has been ruled homicide, while the death of her son-in-law, Mark A. Koeman, has been ruled suicide, the coroner’s office said.

The bodies were discovered by a woman Friday morning in Mennell’s home at 20377 Pahgre Road in south Montrose County, authorities said.

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Department and Colorado Bureau of Investigation are investigating.

Spokeswoman Bobbie McCoid said the Sheriff’s Department had no other information to release and she declined to answer questions about the case.
