Cosmetics recession-proof? Saleswoman has car to show for it

There’s good money in de-stressing others.

For 57-year-old Palisade resident Linda Leasure, there’s a candy-apple red 2009 Mustang
convertible in it, too.

Leasure earned the car, valued at $38,000, by reaching earnings goals as a director with BeautiControl Consultants, a home-based business that features in-home spa parties with spa-quality products and treatments. She celebrated with a party at Western Slope Ford’s showroom Saturday.

She met the qualifications by August 2008 with the help of team members in a handful of different states, including 75 members in Grand Junction.

“It’s been proven that there are three things that do not lose their value during a recession or depression or war: alcohol, tobacco and cosmetics,” Leasure said. “No matter how poor people are, they still want to look good. During World War II, one of the biggest sellers anywhere was red lipstick.”

She said she believes demand for cosmetics will remain and translate to the products BeautiControl has in its line. BeautiControl’s parent company is Tupperware and has been in business 27 years.

Leasure, who retired from a sales career at Greenfield Seed, has been with the company for three years.

“The average spa for a brand new consultant, if it has five to eight people, is $500 to $1,000 a spa. It isn’t expensive stuff. It’s just that once they try it, they want it all,” she said.

During a spa party, the company consultant offers hand and foot treatments and sets up demonstrations for light massage and microdermabrasion.

Unlike most car programs through home-based businesses, Leasure gets to keep, not lease, the car.

Directors also have opportunities to drive a lease car, said Melissa Brisbois, spokeswoman for BeautiControl.

“We are proud that Linda has joined the growing number of BeautiControl directors across the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada who are on the ride of their lives with
BeautiControl behind the wheel of this phenomenal car,” Brisbois said.

She is among 600 consultants to whom the company has given cars in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
