Councilor McArthur

Back in March, when The Daily Sentinel endorsed Duncan McArthur for a seat on the Grand Junction City Council, it wasn’t because he was one of the candidates now referred to as “chambermades,” people recruited and supported by the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce.

Rather, we backed McArthur because of his clear knowledge of city procedures (especially zoning rules), his readiness to examine issues in detail before forming an opinion on them and his willingness to offer his own views on such issues, not what he thinks others want to hear.

Now that McArthur has finally become a member of the City Council, we hope he will display those same qualities and will prove to be a thoughtful, independent council member.

McArthur was narrowly defeated by the late Harry Butler in his bid to be elected to the council last April. Monday night, he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Butler’s death, in his second attempt to secure the post by appointment. The first attempt, several weeks ago, was unsuccessful when the council deadlocked 3-3 on McArthur and applicant Les Miller.

Monday, McArthur was chosen on a 3-1 vote.

We have made no bones about our belief that the City Council should have allowed voters to elect two people to fill the current vacancies on the council. Instead, councilors chose to appoint people to fill the vacancies, as the City Charter allows.

So, congratulations and best of luck to McArthur now that he is finally on the council. And thanks are due to the other three people who also applied for the seat and endured the lengthy questioning from council members. One of them may yet be chosen to fill the seat vacated last week by Rick Brainard.
