Court: No campaign finance limits for small groups
DENVER — A federal appellate court in Denver says Colorado can’t impose campaign finance reporting rules on small groups.
A three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today in favor of a group of six homeowners that fought a proposal by the city of Parker to annex their subdivision in 2006. The group raised less than $1,000.
In its written opinion, the panel said that the government can’t justify imposing campaign limits on such small groups.
An Arlington, Va.-based libertarian legal group, the Institute for Justice, filed a lawsuit after proponents of annexation filed a complaint alleging the group violated Colorado campaign finance laws.
