Dental program enrollment suspended

Due to high demand, a Grand Junction dental practice will temporarily stop enrolling new patients in its 2-month-old dental care membership program at the end of the day today.

Grand Dental, 1035 Grand Ave., introduced the My Personal Dentist program in late November. For $75 per month, or $900 per year, My Personal Dentist participants could get teeth cleanings, X-rays, fillings and other dental basics from Grand Dental’s Dr. Eric Benefield, plus up to six major dental procedures in a year without paying anything beyond the membership fee. Major procedures include crowns, root canals, dentures and partials but not dental implants, Invisalign braces or cosmetic dentistry.

The program was introduced in response to increasing dental insurance premiums and caps on the number of dental procedures covered by most insurance companies, according to Tim Becker, marketing director for Grand Dental. Becker said some patients could not afford all of the procedures they needed with their dental insurance, so Benefield decided to try something different with a membership program.

“Dr. Benefield wants to be able to help people get a healthy mouth,” Becker said. “Response has been great.”

While Becker would not reveal how many people have signed up for My Personal Dentist, it’s enough that enrollment is being suspended so as not to overwhelm the office with new patients. A firm date has not been selected, but Becker said enrollment in the program likely will resume some time in June.

$75 a month is equal to about $70,000 in a lifetime, for dental work.
