Downtown parade stirs patriotism

The start of the Veterans Day Parade, beginning at 9th St and Main

Barbara Fisher has a soft spot for military veterans.

The Navy mother from Grand Junction remembers two decades ago when she was nearly blocked from communicating with her son because of his special security status while serving in the Persian Gulf.

Fisher had no problems Saturday showing her pride during the Veterans Day Parade as it wound through downtown.

“I think it’s a good time to remember our veterans, whether they died or not,” she said, cheering for high school bands and young military recruits during the parade.

Hundreds of onlookers lined Grand Junction’s Main Street as the parade, replete with color guards, veterans on motorcycles and even some pushing shopping carts woven with red, white and blue streamers, passed by.

“A parade like this kind of brings out my patriotism,” said John Spor, a Navy veteran who came downtown to watch.

Others enjoyed the sunny but cool weather and were pleased by the attendance. More than 50 floats were registered in the event.

Veterans Day, which is observed on Nov. 11, falls on Tuesday. Nov. 11 is the anniversary of the end of World War I, which formally ended on the 11th hour of Nov. 11, 1918.
