Driver faces hearing in fatal wreck

DELTA — A Delta County driver arrested after one passenger died and two others were hurt in a May 9 rollover is free on bond but could face a higher bond amount later this week.

According to an arrest affidavit, Austin resident Corbin Lovato, 21, rolled his vehicle on Sawmill Mesa Road on May 9, severely injuring Dustin Green, 24, of Cedaredge and injuring two other passengers. Green died the next day from his injuries at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.

According to the affidavit, Lovato swerved to avoid hitting a deer before losing control of the truck and rolling three times. Alcohol consumption is suspected to be a factor in the crash, the affidavit said.

Lovato is free on a $5,000 bond but faces a bond hearing at 1 p.m. Thursday at Delta Combined Courts. He has not been formally charged in the crash.

Daniel Bell, 30, suffered a broken neck, and Travis Tunget, 24, suffered minor injuries in the crash.
