Driver in crash at home listed as habitual offender

John R. Flynn

A Grand Junction man whose SUV went out of control and rolled into a home Saturday had his driver’s license revoked three years ago for being a habitual traffic offender, according to an arrest affidavit.

John R. Flynn, 25, 583 Grand View Court, has been arrested or cited eight times since January 2007 for driving with a revoked license, the affidavit said. It’s unclear how many of those cases were alcohol-related driving offenses.

Prior to Saturday’s accident, Flynn wasn’t eligible to apply for another license until January 2012, the affidavit said.

Police allege Flynn was behind the wheel of a Toyota SUV that rolled and slammed into a home at 1002 Bookcliff Ave. around 8 p.m. Saturday, smashing a bedroom window as the homeowners were eating dinner.

Flynn managed to climb out of the truck, where he was greeted by Grand Junction police officers who observed he had a strong odor of alcohol, watery, bloodshot eyes and slurred or “nonsensical” speech, the affidavit said. Officers also saw multiple bottles of Budweiser or Mickeys strewn about the SUV interior, the affidavit said.

Statements made by Flynn to arresting officers were redacted in the affidavit provided Sunday by Grand Junction police.

Police Sgt. William Baker said Flynn refused to take chemical or breath tests or have his blood drawn for a determination of blood-alcohol level.

Flynn was booked into Mesa County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and driving as a habitual traffic offender.
