During slow season, landscaper strings Christmas lights

ight displays on homes and businesses, such as the old Mesa County Courthouse, above, are a side project for Toby Daniels, manager of RE Landscape Services of Grand Junction. He and his staff operate Christmas Decor during the holidays.

Winter isn’t much of a busy season for RE Landscape Services, 2523 High Country Court, so the company has a side project called Christmas Decor of Grand Junction during the holidays.

Manager Toby Daniels and his staff design and hang Christmas light displays at homes and businesses. Their handiwork can be seen on the facade of the Blue Moon Bar & Grille, Alpine Bank, the Courtyard and Residence Inn Marriott hotels and Enstrom Candies, among other locations.

Prices for the service start at $800. The economy hasn’t helped Christmas Decor attract many new customers, but Daniels said he’s retained about 90 percent of his customers from previous years.

Designs usually begin with an outline of a building’s roof, then an outline of the building’s windows.

After that, Christmas Decor workers add lights to shrubs and string them around trees. Some customers also opt for luminaries lining their walkway or yard, lawn ornaments and wreaths and greenery.

Once the design is finished, Christmas Decor employees hang the lights and perform any maintenance necessary, such as replacing broken bulbs.

Whenever the home or business owner is ready, workers return to take down the lights and store them until next November or December.

Christmas Decor of Grand Junction is one of 400 franchisees of the Christmas Decor brand based in Lubbock, Texas.
