Eight who fell in Iraq, Afganistan since 9/11 had local ties

Several thousand U.S. Marines, soldiers, airmen and sailors have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since the 9/11 attacks. Eight of them had local ties.

Killed Aug. 29, 2003, when his convoy was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade north of Suaydat, Iraq.

Marine Lance Cpl. Chance Russell Phelps, 19, Clifton

2nd Platoon, Battery L, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, I Marine Expeditionary Force

Killed April 9, 2004, by hostile fire in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

Marine Lance Cpl. Mark Eugene Engel, 21, Grand Junction

D Company, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force

Killed July 21, 2004, after being wounded in action July 6 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

Army Staff Sgt. Michael Bear Shackelford, 25,Grand Junction

B Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division

Killed Nov. 28, 2004, by small-arms fire in Ar Ramadi, Iraq.

Marine Lance Cpl. Chad Bryant Maynard, 19, Montrose

A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1 Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force

Killed June 15, 2005, when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device near Ar Ramadi, Iraq.

Army Cpl. Chris Sitton, 21, Montrose

710th Combat Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division

Killed Aug. 19, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy in Kunar, Afghanistan.

Army Cpl. Wade James Oglesby, 27, Grand Junction

Battery C, 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division

Killed April 18, 2007, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Taji, Iraq.

Army Sgt. Aaron B. Cruttenden, 25

161st Engineer Support Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade

Killed Nov. 7, 2010, by small-arms fire from insurgents in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Note: He was promoted from corporal to sergeant posthumously.
