Escobar’s header enough for Colorado Mesa in 1-0 victory
Marco Escobar scored off a defensive header in the first half Monday and the Colorado Mesa University men’s soccer team’s defense made that one goal hold up in a 1-0 win at Dixie State College.
Escobar beat Dixie’s goalie to the left side at the 16:26 mark of the first half to give the Mavericks (1-0-1) their first win of the season.
Mesa goalkeeper Micah Conrads made six saves in the shutout. It was a defensive game the entire way — the Mavericks took eight shots, three on goal, and the Red Storm had eight, six on goal.
The goal by Escobar was on the third shot of the game, one by each team. Right after Escobar’s goal, Stevie Palma tried to give the Mavs a two-goal lead, but his shot was high.
Conrads made a save at the 42:25 mark of the first half and the Mavericks went into halftime hanging on to that one-goal lead.
He turned away a header early in the second half, one of two saves in the first five minutes.
His final save came with just more than one minute to play as the Red Storm made one last push, but he gathered in a header by Alex Cox at the 88:55 mark to preserve the win.
