Fanatics versus fantastics

There’s a power struggle taking place in Iran right now, but it’s not between moderates and conservatives or reformers and rigid traditionalists. Rather, the fight is between old guard Muslim clerics who have ruled Iran since the late 1970s, and people accused of being magicians and practicing sorcery.

The latter group are allies of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has fallen out of favor with the clerics. So the charges of sorcery and mysticism may have more to do with diminishing his credibility than actuality.

What this means for the millions of hard-working Iranians who simply want a normal life in a modern world is anybody’s guess.
