Fired human services employees get $80,818

Two former Mesa County Department of Human Services employees, Diann Rice and Susan Diaz, who were dismissed from their jobs in June, have received settlements from Mesa County.

One was issued a check July 28 for $42,139, and the other was paid $38,679 on July 30, according to letter from Mesa County Attorney Lyle Dechant. The county does not indicate who received which amount.

Dechant released the dollar total after Grand Junction resident Bill Hugenberg filed two open-records requests for the information.

The first written request was dated Oct. 17, and Dechant responded Friday, but that led Hugenberg to make a second request in writing Monday asking for more specific information. In the second letter, Hugenberg referenced a state statute that requires public bodies to release “any amount paid or benefit provided incidental to termination of employment.”

Dechant responded to the second request Wednesday.
