FOR SOME BUSINESSES, THANKSGIVING IS ALL GRAVY

The whole town is anything but shut down when it comes to serving up Thanksgiving dinner at restaurants. 

At least 23 area restaurants are open for business on turkey day.

Several, such as Paradox Grille at Gateway Canyons, the Wine Country Inn and Golden Corral are going all out to serve up turkey dinners. Others, such as 626 on Rood, Don Jilberto’s and Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant on North Avenue, will be open but will serve their regular menu only.

Some restaurants haven’t decided whether they will be open, but in tough times, many restaurants jump at the chance to serve customers not wanting to cook and clean on the day that kicks off the official holiday season.

“We were just jam-packed last year,” said Meg Williams, a server at Eagles Nest Family Dining, 1040 Interstate 70, Exit 47, in Palisade. The eatery accommodates up to 170 people.

“We’re serving turkey and ham and everything on the side,” said Tom Casabona, co-owner and chef of the Red Rose Cafe at 235 Main St. in Palisade.

The Dragon Wall Chinese Buffet is mixing its turkey day meal in with oysters and snow crab.

Johnny 50’s Old Fashioned Pizza, 569 32 Road 3-C, was an unknown on the Thanksgiving scene last year when it served up meals at no cost.

“It was kind of a flop. We had only 30 to 50 people,” owner Roscoe Odneal said.

The restaurant is doing it again from 1 to 4 p.m., with traditional Thanksgiving-meal servings. This time, however, the meal is being heavily advertised in area churches.

“We don’t know what to expect this year,” Odneal said.
