Former cop pleads not guilty to misdemeanor assault

A former Grand Junction Police Department officer pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Courtney Crooks, 24, who appeared in court free on bond and represented by private attorney Martha Kent, is scheduled for a jury trial starting Feb. 25, 2010, in County Court Judge Craig Henderson’s courtroom.

Crooks, a patrol officer, was arrested Aug. 28 on suspicion of physical harassment involving his wife, following an investigation by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

He was placed on unpaid leave from the Police Department and had been the focus of two internal investigations.

Those internal cases were closed by the department after Crooks resigned Sept. 16.
