Fruita may decide on possible MMJ ban tonight
The Fruita City Council is expected to decide tonight whether to ask voters if they want to ban medical marijuana centers or prohibit the businesses itself.
Public testimony will be taken. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center, 325 E. Aspen Ave.
Should Fruita ban medical marijuana centers, it would join the city of Grand Junction and Mesa County in outlawing the commercial sale of cannabis. The only center currently operating in the Grand Valley is located in Palisade.
Fruita city staff have recommended that council members refer a measure to the voters for the April 2012 election, rather than make the decision themselves, given that a statewide moratorium on medical marijuana centers is in place until June 2012.
No medical marijuana centers exist currently within Fruita city limits.
